Why do we have a feeling of a fast-beating heart in bed when our body is supposed to be in "rest mode"?
Many factors can cause heart palpitations, but my case was that the autonomic nervous system was not functioning properly.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the nervous system that connects your brain to most of your internal organs and controls body function without consciousness, such as heart rate, blood vessels, digestive system, metabolism, etc.
There are two parts in ANS:
Sympathetic nerve system (SNS)
Parasympathetic nerve system (PSNS)
SNS controls the "fight-or-flight" response, which helps to prepare the body for stress-related activities. It typically stimulates organs, including an increase in heart rate, dilation of the pupils, sweat, etc. Modern-day stressors also stimulate SNS, such as work stress, financial concerns, relationship problems, etc. Conversely, PSNS generally works by regulating the body's functions during rest, controlling mostly quieter activities such as regulating heart rate, relaxing muscles, and controlling the bladder. These two systems have harmonizing functions, operating together to maintain the body's homeostasis.
In my case, SNS was overactive, and PSNS was not functioning properly when the body was supposed to be in "rest mode".
So are heart palpitations preventive? Are there any treatments for heart palpitations?🤔
